The French Navy's new multi-mission frigate (FREMM) "Alsace" entered "active duty" on 22 November 2021. It is the seventh Aquitaine-class FREMM overall but the first of two air-defense frigates in the FREMM DA variant.

French Defense Minister Florence Parly stated,
“The multi-mission frigate Alsace is ready for operations. It belongs to a class of frigates recognized worldwide for its combat capabilities. The renewal of the Marine Nationale equipment is essential in the current strategic environment. To protect our coasts and our exclusive economic zone, in the face of obstacles to freedom of navigation, in the face of attempted intimidation at sea, in the face of the desire to deny access to certain areas, France needs a strong, efficient and credible Navy”.

In this video Defense Updates analyzes why the French Navy's new frigate Alsace is an excellent warship?

The frigate has a nice clean style and looks ready to rock with its assortment of weapons. I'm sure it will be a great asset to the French Navy 🇫🇷

It should be noted that the USN under construction Constellation-class frigate is a stretched and more heavier armed version of the Frégate Européenne Multi-Missions (FREMM) multipurpose frigate. Where the Alsace displaces over 6, 000 tons at 142 meters in length and 20 meters on the beam, the Constellation displaces 7, 291 tons at 151 meters and 20 meters. The Constellation has different sensors, missiles and combat integration systems it however uses essentially the same hull and interior layout for quickness of production of a proven design. 20 ships of the Constellation-class are planned.

It sounds like that ship will be a great asset for the French navy and the ship could possibly be used in the area around Ukraine as Russia is preparing for war.

I get that this is an enhanced FREMM more capable in AAW, but can't help thinking swapping the A70 vls for A50 doesn't make much sense, with too few platforms as is the case for most European Navies being able to carry out Land Attack should still be a capability worth keeping.

Nice videao Thanks. There is a mistake in the F21 heavy torpedo description: the charge weight is 250 kg not 30 odd kilos. Speed is 50 knots, reach 50 km, weight is 1, 5 tons, guidance by optical wire or active / passive sonar

Nothing wrong with French engineering! A staunch political ally of USA. French support was probably driven by it's rivalry with UK. Any navy would want that in their corner! Vive la France!

Imagine MBDA France upgrading Mistral missile w/ VL ability or/& its manpad launcher as RWS w/ rapid auto-reload to deal w/ missile-based point-defense. Aster-30 then can occupy all 32 cells

I am still wondering why they didn't order 8 general purpose and 4 DA versions. That way they would have a DA per high value asset, in wartime they can be shifted to the deployed asset or easily replaced if damaged. The general purpose vessels are always good to have around and unlike the RN they have replaced most of the older frigates in time. I hope they will be building two PANG carriers and mothball the CDG carrier for a couple of years. It will probably be necessary soon after decommissioning.

The newest version of Exocet missile is still sub-sonic, some people wonder why don't they upgrade their anti-ship missile to be supersonic?

The torpedo only has a 32.7kg warhead?

As an Italian I think France made a great mistake for their DA FREMMs. They kept a PESA radar for an AAW frigate which is very low compared to the altitude and the performance of the Italian AESA. I know that for a reason of national pride they wouldn’t have used the Italian FREMMs as the model for the DA, but they could have at least put the radar on a higher position. Except this 🇮🇹🤝🇫🇷
Edit: i never understood why they didn’t buy our Davide/Dart/Strales system and why they preferred a CODLOG instead of a CODLAG
