The penultimate night on the 'Hot Space' Tour sees the band make their last appearance in Sapporo as they wouldn't return to the city in 1985. While the overall show might just be the shortest one on the leg (only possibly beaten by the full first night in Fukuoka), it's most certainly the most energetic one! The band are absolutely powering through the set, playing songs at double the tempo and going all out on most notes. Freddie sounds unstable but still goes for a great deal of high notes, even attempting the studio phrasing during the first verse of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' for the first time since 1978! Before the song, he plays the intro of 'Death on Two Legs' for the first time since the European shows. Freddie generally seems to be in a great mood as he also adds a reference to 'Bicycle Race' during 'Fat Bottomed Girls', the last time the rocker would be referenced on stage. During an excellent version of 'Get Down, Make Love', Freddie does his own little version of 'Sakura' as part of the vocal improvisation. This is the only 'Hot Space' show to not feature 'Save Me' on the setlist as it has been replaced by 'Teo Torriatte' tonight, the first of only two full performances of the song and Freddie sounds great on it tonight. This show also features the last performance of 'Rock It' as they would revert to 'The Hero' for the last night of the tour. If it didn't become clear enough, this is one of my favourite shows and I highly recommend everyone checking it out!

Snippets at this show: 'Sakura' (during 'Get Down, Make Love'), 'Bicycle Race' (during 'Fat Bottomed Girls'), 'Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)' (before 'Bohemian Rhapsody') and 'Jump to It' by Aretha Franklin (during 'Another One Bites the Dust').

1. Rock It (Prime Jive) / We Will Rock You (fast) (8/10) - The penultimate show of the Hot Space Tour starts with the final ever live performance of Rock It. Freddie once again sounds and embellishes the first “it gets down to my SOUL”. The A4 sustain sounds phenomenal and might be the best he ever did in 1982. The fast We Will Rock You is literally performed at the speed of light here and it’s AMAZING! Freddie sounds energised and enthusiastic despite not going above a G4 during both verses. The instrumental section is simply terrific with the whole band giving their absolute all which sounds even more impressive at this tempo. Freddie’s adlibbing is fantastic, he greets the audience with some enthusiastic helloes and screams “Rock and Roll tonight!”. Brian adds a great lick during the final chorus. The finale has Freddie adlibbing strong G4s. The fanfare is super lengthy and drawn out.
2. Action This Day (8/10) - “Hello! How is everybody? Okay? Ikaka desuka! Alright, let’s do some more, let’s have some – action!” The first verse has Roger sounding much better than he did back in Nagoya but Freddie is taking it down a notch and drops conservative notes. The 2nd verse has Freddie singing “let-down” twice which was a nice change up to the otherwise quite standard verse. The first chorus has Freddie sounding strong and nailing the higher harmonies (apart from a crack on “AHH you got the power” which he makes up with a great embellishment on the following line). The final verse is as good as it gets after the EU leg. The 2nd chorus has similar energy and Freddie nails “AHH you got the power!” which sounds amazing with his darker voice. Mandel’s keyboard solo is great with much creativity and as he plays a “dum-dum-dum” hit Freddie adlibs along and later adlibs again. The jam is quite loose for Freddie who’s really having some fun here and I fucking love it. The only downside is a short segment (about 15 seconds max) where no one does anything but Brian makes click and starts off his amazing licks which sound extra heavy tonight and Freddie takes over with great adlibbing before going into a great outro. This is DEFINITELY the best rendition of the leg! Freddie totally makes up for the B4s and the band is in a very loose and creative mood.
3. Play the Game (8/10) - Freddie plays a needlessly dramatic piano intro (Roger joins him as well) and you know that I freaking love it! The first verse has Freddie playing embellishing lines on the piano which sounds awesome. The first verse starts off with Freddie hitting the opening A4 and sounding nice in general. He embellishes “when you know the RULES” and has a superb sounding soft tone. The 2nd verse has him struggling to get the A4. The following verse is solid with some surprising notes and a monotonous phrasing on “all you have to do…”. The bridge has Freddie dodging the first A4 but singing quite nice alternate phrasings for the B4 section. The first guitar solo is quite great with Brian expanding it heavily through great licks. The final chorus has the “don’t play hard to GET” embellishment, a crack on “free world” but is decent overall. The final solo has Brian ohhh jesus playing super nice stuff. Oh god this embellishment. sigh This show man…
4. Calling All Girls (8/10) - “Okay, we got a song now, wrisen… written by Roger Taylor over here and uhm. The next song is by Roger Taylor and this is uh, this is a message of love for everybody here tonight, it’s called ‘Calling All Girls’”. The first verse is as great as ever. Only thing is that Brian played some nice licks around the middle. The first chorus is great with Freddie screaming excitedly during the pre-chorus bit and then nailing two great G4 sustains. The 2nd verse is nice. Freddie again yells “Everybody got the message, baby?” before going into a great G4 sustain. The first instrumental section is great with Brian going off with great licks. The final chorus has Freddie adding “you got and nails both G4s again. The 2nd instrumental section has Brian again going off in some moments before Freddie takes the attention with fantastic A4s and the whole jam sounds nice from here onwards.
5. Now I’m Here (9.5/10) - Brian’s intro noodling sounds great and almost has a country rock vibe to it. He almost gets close to hinting at It’s Late again but before he fully goes into that, he begins playing the song intro. Freddie sounds strong and nails an A4 sustain before nailing the FUCK out of “MADE me live again”. He adlibs “Hit me, hit me!” afterwards and sings a great first verse. OH SHIT YES, HE ALSO GOES FOR THE 2ND “MADE ME LIVE AGAIN!!!” It’s slightly cracked but FUCK YES FREDDIE! He comes up with a nice melody on “Don’t move, don’t speak, don’t feel no pain” and obviously HE NAILS THE A4 THIS SHIT’S GIVING ME GOOSEBUMPS MAN. AND HOLY FUCK THE JAM STARTS OFF SO GOOD. Sorry, need to calm down. BUT HOLY FUCK THAT GUITAR WORK, BRIAN IS LITERALLY BURNING RIGHT NOW, THAT’S HOW FIERY HIS LICKS AND RIFFS AND EVERYTHING ARE. The drumming is insanely good as well. Freddie adlibs a bit on beat and sings “I gotta leave it with you” a few times just like last show and gets in that scat singing section afterwards with the band not entirely stopping to play until the audience takes over with some clapping. Freddie sounds great. He encourages them to clap some more and lets the band fully take over which they do amazingly and cracks on a falsetto sustain. Lol. The drumming is fantastic.
6. Put Out the Fire (8/10) - Again no improv before the first verse so they actually only did that in Tokorozawa. Freddie sounds fantastic on the first verse with some great grit. The pre-chorus is solid and Freddie goes over to a great first chorus with two great A4 scoops. The 2nd verse is great as well. The 2nd chorus has Freddie struggling a bit to reach the first A4 but slides up to the final A4 instead of scooping which sounded great.
7. Dragon Attack / Now I’m Here (reprise) (8/10) - There is a unique moment during the intro where Brian suddenly stops playing for unknown reasons but honestly it kinda sounds on purpose although it probably wasn’t. The verses section is good with Freddie putting on that great tone. The first chorus is strong, Brian’s transition lick is solid but he did better before. The 2nd chorus is decent. The solo section has Brian creating some awesome heavy chords in the beginning and his guitar tone sounds fantastic throughout, giving the solo an even darker and more massive vibe than usually. Freddie’s adlibbing is little but when he gets around to do it it’s great.
8. Love of My Life (8/10) - Unfortunately, the tape has a cut right after ‘Now I’m Here’ ends and only comes back halfway into the intro noodling. Brian: “If you feel like it, we’d like you to sing along with us. You want to?” As Freddie comes in, he sounds a bit too whispery for me but apparently Freddie agrees as he sounds way better right thereafter with his amazing soft tone sounding really awesome without going into the whispering. The 2nd verse sounds great and has Freddie letting the audience take over for the chorus. The bridge is solid with Freddie staying on the same note on “when this is blown over”. The solo is very nice and the finale again has that great tone on Freddie.
9. Band Improv / Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together) (9/10) - Tonight’s band improv is much shorter (only about a minute) and when Freddie has already stopped adlibbing very nicely, the audience continues to clap, making the next song impossible to introduce so Freddie screams confused “Now I can’t fucking stop ‘em. STOP!”. Hilarious banter from the geezer. “We have Brian May on the piano now, ladies and gentlemen!” TEO MY LOVIEE!!! It’s so great to hear this intro after such a long time. The first verse sounds great with Freddie sounding pretty much perfect. The little vibrato on “paper moon” sounded great. The 2nd verse is great as well. The first chorus has a great mood swing and sees Freddie singing with a lot of power, sounding good and Roger being solid enough. The 3rd verse is nice and has some more of that great falsetto. The 2nd chorus is also great and for the first time ever, the band goes into the bridge afterwards, Freddie sounds absolutely amazing here and nails the ever living shit out of “don’t TURN YOUR HEAAART!!” The last bunch of choruses is great and has Freddie holding up really well (this song is super tiring to sing).

Another awesome thumbnail. This really is one of the best shows after the European hot space leg. The band has so much energy and this performance in particular is filled with emotion and just raw passion for playing music for their fans. One of my favorite shows of the hot space tour. Thank you Leon.
