I've heard chewing gum described as poor man's cardio. Something about the chewing helps to regulate your breathing and prevent you from getting blown up. Never did it myself but just something I heard.

The younger crowd including may not know or remember this, but chewing gum back in the day was considered mad disrespectful to older generations. So chewing gum very aggressively ( like you're a cow chewing cud ) was a very heelish thing to do, which is why you saw HBK doing it.
