It speaks to our individual isolation, even those conceited enough to consider ourselves cosmopolitan, to learn that there are music lovers who have "never heard of Judy Henske". As a Judy fan for no less than 60 years, I am always surprised to hear that there are still some who are unfamiliar with this singular talent. With the possible exception of Nat Cole, she was easily the most electrifying performer I've ever seen. Her stage presence was climate-changing. Audiences, without exception, brought her back for encore after encore. Keep your face to the wind, Judy. You will indeed be missed.

wow she is incredible ! The shaman say cry man cry ! It helps the spirit go on to heaven ! It is those no one weeps for that get stuck down here as ghosts ! She is so heavy duty sounding emotionally that I `m cryin` and I didn`t even know her!!!! Thank You As Always !

What a beautiful tribute for a dear friend. Her style and phrasing remind me of Beth Hart. This was fabulous, Lee. I’d never heard of her….. that last song….I’m picturing a smoky bar in an old black and white film noir movie. Amazing

My heart is broken. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Henske on a couple of occasions with Maureen. Her talent and verve were incomparable. My condolences to Craig and her family on this sad day.

Hi Lee. Thank you for the very nice tribute. Well done! I live next-door to Craig and Judy. I learned things about Judy that I haven’t known in 15 years! There is a benefit to living next-door to their household. My wife’s and my bedroom window are 40 feet from Craig’s living room and piano. Very frequently we doze off to the faint sound of Craig’s piano practicing filling the room.

A gutsy, unique and brilliant vocalist. The width and breadth of her talent coupled with her ability to cross genera and so sweetly, sometimes fiercely, nail each piece she wrapped herself around was nothing short of amazing. She was bold and more than capable. Leland, I feel for you and Craig and all those who were graced by her talent and friendship. She was certainly one of a kind!

Thank you for this posting about Judy Leland. Sorry for your loss of Sally Kellerman too. I remember that Sally showed up to see Judy at Cafe Largo. You’re absolutely right, there was nobody like Judy, with her BIG energy & voice to match. I knew this too when I became a fan of hers at 13 in 1963 and caught up with her earlier recording with Dave Guard & The Whiskey Hill Singers. Thank goodness they let her have her own track on that album with an incomparable version of “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out”. I’ve never heard anybody exhibit a screaming singing note like the one she delivers at the finish of that song. My condolences go out to you and Maureen and Craig & Kate and all their family at this sad, sad time. Thank you again for this wonderful tribute.

Hey, Lee and all. Lee, this stretch of time has been so hard on the musical community and you. It hurts to lose a friend. I can hear the emotional warble in your voice. What a rough run you and these families have had. You, the family, and friends are held in the light.

My Condolences to you and Craig. What a loss. She was a force of nature. "Odetta & "Flame Thrower" Indeed. She also reminded me of Hoyt Axton in her unbridled personality.

Hi all. What a voice. Sorry Lee for the sadness over the last few days of one’s you know who were given their Angel Wings and called home. Love is stronger than anything else and it is so wonderful to see you visit fond memories. Crying has a way of washing the soul. Thoughts are with you brother. Prayers for Ukraine and it’s beautiful people.

Judy Henske's "High Flying Bird" album was in the slim mix that I played over and over and shaped my musical soul in the mid 1960's in Sand Springs Oklahoma. I learned some songs to play from her then and I still listen to her music today, a lot. Thank you for all your story of her that I never knew. Her music was and is her story for me. Beautiful!
