The "magic dingus box" on Danny's guitar was a homemade controller for his Leslie, Echoplex, tremelo, and reverb.

He's f'ing mind-blowing, and no matter how many times I watch him play, it never ceases to make my jaw drop. He said he would do banjo rolls on his guitar, and not only could he play lightning fast, he was also tight.

Gatton could literally play anything. Sometimes in the same song. Blues to jazz to country to rockabilly. Seamless. What a master.

Danny Gaton was an inspiration to many guitarists. They call him the "Humbler" because any guitar player was humbled after seeing him play. The contraption on his guitar was hooked up to a Leslie speaker and other effects, Buddy Emmons on pedal steel is the #1 steel player. To have both of these fellows on the same stage is a gift.

Awesome! Buddy and Danny, the best at their respective instruments. Most guitar players play what they can. Danny plays what he wahts. And Buddy Emmons is undisputed king og pedal steel. This is LEGENDARY

I was fortunate to live in DC area at the time and so I got to see him often at Club Soda. An amazingly small club to hold someone of such talent. Up close and personal. He was just unreal.

Truth is that Danny Gatton was the greatest guitar player to ever live. Not the most popular but technically and naturally the best.

All I have to say is that I was very lucky that I got to see him about a dozen times in small clubs in and around DC. He did what he did masterfully and he was as great as anyone I've ever seen, and I'm comparing him to the well known icons that almost everyone knows or has heard of.

One of the absolute best ever! So blessed to have been able to see him several times, Danny and the boys never disappointed! Buddy Emmons is a complete beast on pedal steel. This entire album is unreal.

Weird seeing a LP strapped on Danny but somehow still sounding like him and his Tele. Give Buddy some love too guys.

Ahhh, the MAGIC DINGUS BOX. What an amazing contraption. And it preceded all the foot pedal effects you see today. His guitar tech, Jay Monterose was a very talented guy. He and Danny came up with the DINGUS BOX. I saw Danny play around the D.C. area quit a few times, and he never disappointed. There's a reason he was known as The Humbler. More then a few aspiring guitar players went home and threw there guitars in the trash after witnessing Danny perform.

There was 2 legends on that stage, Buddy Emmons is the other, he was one of the top Nashville session steel players. Both these guys were a head of their time. Danny still one of my favorite pickers ever. Buddy did not just play, he improved the instrument itself to become what modern steel guitar are today.

Buddy Emmons lends his namesake to two brands of pedal steel guitar. First was "Shobud" a combination of the names of the great Shot Jackson, and Buddy Emmons, and later "Emmons" brand pedal steel guitars. Shot Jackson was more the master builder of pedal steels, B benders, G benders and custom banjos with benders and detuners. The thing on Danny's guitar controls an Echoplex EP3 and maybe some volume & drive. The box on his Telecaster controlled an EP3 Echoplex. Buddy is playing down on the lower C6 jazz neck that almost no cowboy ever uses. Most cowboys stay on the upper E9 neck. Emmons is pure legend.

Scott Taylor was the drummer & Steve Wolf was the bass dude. This was recorded in late 1978, or early 79 at the legendary Cellar Door in Washington DC. The Explosion did a string of 3-4 day runs there every few months during those years. Thanks for doing this review.

Depression robbed us off such an amazing talent. Check out his car videos, he built equally as cool cars as his playing.
