CNN Hero 2015 - Maggie Doyne

Maggie Doyne is the mother of 50 children. She was named CNN Hero in 2015 for her incredible work looking after orphaned Nepalese children.

This is her inspiring story.

“I’m the mother to 50 children living in the Himalayas of Nepal and running a community programme to alleviate poverty.

When I was 18 years old I sort of re-routed my life and instead of going to college and university, like I was supposed to, I ended up travelling the world and ultimately seeing what was happening in Nepal.

There was an orphan crisis following the civil war and I basically bought a piece of land with babysitting money.

I hated orphanages and didn’t like what I was seeing so in my 18-year-old mind I was like ‘I’m going to do it better,’ so that’s what I did.

I begun adopting kids, starting with one and then two and then five and it ultimately grew and grew, and I couldn’t stop taking kids in and that’s how we got here to 50 kids.
