Hong Kong Leader On Voting Rights For Those Living in Mainland China
Показать описание
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam responded to questions about voting rights for Hongkongers living in mainland China at a press conference Tuesday. Lam said that any changes to the electoral system would first be put to members of the public and the Legislative Council.
“The reality is a large number of Hong Kong permanent residents who are registered voters and who are eligible to vote are now spending a lot of time in the mainland, whether it is for work, for investment, or for study," said Lam. "That is a reality, OK. And so these people will also expect that they have a chance to vote in a general election in Hong Kong because they still have very strong connections with Hong Kong."
The comments followed a rise in tensions when local media reported that a proposal was being put together by Lam's administration to allow Hongkongers living in mainland China to vote in upcoming elections.
Lam said that as "change in the voting arrangements, especially to allow voting to take place outside of Hong Kong, will require a legislature ammendment" people will be asked to "express a view". She added that Hong Kong legislators would also have to accept the proposal.
