That engine looks like it’s made of engines 🫠

German engineering-
It's complicated because we can.

A little story I heard years ago.
During WW2 the Germans were comparing some of thier equipment to the comparable captured American hardware. ( an artillery gun I think.)
In one critical area the German gun had a dozen different pieces.
The Amercan gun had a similar mechanism but was only comprised of just three pieces.
The Germans were impressed.

PSA: don't take your 100k+ sports car to Greasy Mike's Auto Shop.

Master audi tech here.

The only part that sucks about this job is that the engine has to come out because the timing chains are on the back. Parts cost about 800-1000$ but the actual work is easy. Without including engine removal time, takes me about 3.5 hours to do these.

Timing chains are in between engine and transmission. Engine has to come out to change the chains. Every 60k

This is why i dont understand how people talk bad about American cars. The interior may be cheap, but the performance is simple, great, and reliable

“Looks like an apology from an ex-wife” Gotta be one of the greatest one liners I’ve ever heard!!!

I fix these. Honestly, removing the engine and timing covers is the hardest part. With the proper timing tools and following instructions, the timing is easy.

not at all as bad as it looks. only 3 of the chains need to be timed and there are brass colored links on the chains you line up with the timing marks during install and the engine will be in time without problem as long as you lock the cams in place. there are more things driven off the cain drive than just the cams.

Thats why only the best techs work on them, 20 years an Audi tech and it still amazes me

Thank you for your clarity. These people need to know where GM stands

I have to agree. I had an 2008 S6 that always had issues. The repairs cost equaled what I got back for it when i sold it to a local dealer. Luckily I had a warranty that covered most of the work. It had a V10 that had growl for an exhaust note, however the inconvenience of always being in the shop was a burden even if the repairs were free.

Those German car engineers are performance focused first. Maintenance and repair seems to be a mere afterthought to them.

Not a Master Audi tech, but I did work on them. As well as BMW, MB, and Porsche, but its not that complicated. Just looks like it. That's what happens when companies are trying to squeeze every bit of fuel economy out of their vehicles. At the end of the day, it's either mechanical, hydraulic, and/or electric.

Yep bought an 4.2 a6 back in the day in Memphis for the low, the dealer was so happy to sell it to me he told me to take it home before i put the money down, 3 months later timing chain tensioners got loose and its still sitting in west Memphis ar since 2012
