A few years ago I made a vid about Observation being the #1 skill, but simplification is a level above after careful consideration. It impacts everything. You gotta make it a priority. Simping is the way. I mean simplification is the way.

As someone who have acquired the simp- technique now I just need to master the -lification. Thanks Marc

This is a really good lesson. One of the best things about doing art digitally is that you can use this heavily when you start any piece, no matter how intricate or realistic, because you can simply cover your "simple" tracks by dropping the sketch layer's opacity later on, or deleting it entirely.

It's true that this method changes how you see the world. I keep a Pinterest folder with everyday, mundane observations which I use as a method to encourage daily sketching — part of this process (and to churn out results more efficiently) involves simplifying how I look at any reference so that sketching is easier.

Another way to help build this skill btw is to try to draw pictures as though they were intended for a children's book. These illustrations are deliberately simplified but are deceptively difficult to do effectively.

Btw kids naturally do this skill very well. Consider their drawings of cars, buildings, ships etc — they are far more observant than we often credit them.

Your such an inspiration. I'd buy the art course if I wasn't 13 and broke, but see you when I'm older and richer!

I've always struggled with the practice of using references, it came across as cheating and just copying someone else's art. It wasn't until I watched one of your videos where you said everything is a reference to something else, that nothing is truly 100% original. I started looking at art differently where everything has its original flare and that's what makes it unique. Simplifying a reference is the first step to identifying and developing that flare. It's a very important step to every artist out there.

Super interesting concept, it really does help. With that being said, Training your eyes to recognize and draw simple shapes takes time. So, when you're doing gesture drawings/SIMPlification, don't get discouraged. You will be pleasantly surprised if spend 30 min a week and compare.

I love your videos, especially the ones where you teach how to practice a skill in just 7 days—they make me super productive. Best wishes!

Nice, this technique applies to virtually all creative process including engineering especially when you start see pass the details to the core structure.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

This is something my mentors have all stressed. And that they’ve observed that many artists just don’t have a method to simplify which leads to time issues and creative compromises.

Thanks to your videos, I have been practicing simplification a LOT throughout my art journey. I'm no master, YET, but I hope with time and a lot of effort I will be able to create art like you and other artists I love. Thanks Marc!!! <3

Interesting. This was something I did specifically with arms and fists as a kid. But for some reason I never applied it to anything else. I haven't really been drawing/painting all my life. It was something I did as a kid and up to like 14-15 then I stopped for like 14 years until I re-discovered it again. I still have that simplification process down on the fist from way back, as you said the process makes it easy to remember. I'll just try to start applying it to other things as well.

I 1000% agree with you Mark It's a very important skill to have, not only for art but for literally everything else as well. Great great video!!

YOOOO!!! This is a great video because this is something I've been taught as well. Im still a relatively intermediate artist and simplification was the thing that helped me with improving alot. This was always what i told when others asked me for advice and it helped them out too! This is such a great skill to have and I'm still mastering it. Im not as confident with my lines yet but im getting there. This is an immediate sub for me.

Marc: the skeleton may call me old
But I'm still kicking with my art passion to help others learn what they enjoy in art.

Hey Mark. I decided to actually buy your course. I wont lie, I been like doing research on you and besides your awesome taeching style which has stuck to me ever since your video on how to properly steal an artists technique and add it to your own, much like in martial arts where you learn others techniques and your own style is stronger for it, I also watched your students reviews and I suddenly desire to be apart of your circle. I just bought your course today, but I wont start right away cuz of family vacations and some obligations. But once I do start, Im gonna commit and I'll even make a video with some set drawings of where I am now and will hold onto them for the after. I am excited and I wanna say, I am ready for this journey. WIsh me luck.

I learned this skill from painting. When I paint, I always see shapes because they are easier to paint with a big, wide brush. When you draw you tend to see lines but if you push yourself you'll see the shapes and makes drawing easier. The way that I remembered it was "Structure" first, details last.

Thank you for this awesome video ! I forgot how important it was to think in simple shapes. I guess it applies to other areas of drawing maybe ? Like simplify shadows, colors ?

I haven't been doing this at all, excited to make it a daily exercise and see how much I grow from it, thanks Marc =).
