It’s illegal, it has to be visible that is not visible. It would just give me a reason to pull you over. Would I give you a ticket no would just tell you to fix it in front of me.Retired Officer in Ca.

I think it would be up to the interpretation of the officer stopping you.

Just tell the officer, “you will have to do a few pushups at the front, then you’ll see it” 🤣🤣👏

California Vehicle Code Section 5201 does not explicitly mention the angle at which the front license plate must be mounted. However, it does require that the license plate be "clearly visible" and "legible." If mounting the front license plate at a slight angle still allows it to be easily seen and read by law enforcement or others, it should be acceptable.

However, keep in mind that interpretations of what constitutes "clearly visible" and "legible" can vary. Law enforcement officers may have different opinions on whether an angled license plate meets these requirements. To avoid potential issues, it's generally best to mount the front license plate in a standard, upright position.

Hawai’i has a front plate law. My friend’s Macan got damaged by Porsche when she took it into service. They gave a loaner Panamera, we went for a drive and went through a sobriety checkpoint. They pulled us over (me driving) because Porsche didn’t put on the front plate. I told the officer it was my friends service loaner and we didn’t get a ticket. Later I found the plate in a storage cubby in the trunk/hatch.
So Hawai’i has a front plate law but what it is specifically not sure as I’ve seen multiple people with plates in the front window

Have mine in VA similar on my SSO Slimline. Not sure if it’s legal but have not been stopped yet.

It’s legal. But like with all laws in CA if a cop is having a bad day or just wants to be difficult he/she may give you a hard time about it. “Clearly visible” to one officer may not be the same for another definitely gonna mount mine in a similar position to you when my bumper comes in !

Utah and Idaho have a front plate law but it’s not enforced thankfully. Ive never ran one on my truck or my old car and didnt get pulled over for it. I hate front plates

There's probably a dozen illegal mods to your truck, they won't give you trouble from this one lol

Shame on our Golden State for not making the readability requirements more specific. They shhould ahve specified a range of elevations and angles over which they expect it to be visible. USDOT numbers on commercial trucks are almost as bad, as they didnt' specify a font size or typeface.

however here in 2023 southern california, still 90+% of Teslas are missing front plates entirely.

Not having a front license plate on your vehicle in California is illegal so that's why you will get a ticket for it. I don't know how much the ticket is in California but you can be pulled over for that. And basically if they go to run your license plate that belongs on another vehicle instead of yours what they will do is they will basically find you heavily and if you have a warrant for your rest they will take the plate off that car run the van off that car and if they find out the car is stolen then you go to jail. But as for these switch license plates they are considered cold plates. That's why they're also called cold plated. So even if you switch out the license plates for one car to another that really is against the law. Because the police can see right through it!

Needs to meet the conditons of the law.Tey probably could if they wanted to..The law reads..
.the plates
SHALL be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and so that
the characters are Upright and display from left to right, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be Clearly legible.

not legal..has to be viewable from straight in front of your vehicle.. It is not viewable from the current position..Ask any CHP officer sometime.. Just mount in the same location with a vertical presentation.Or mount it where your bumper says your name on the drivers side..it may be at a slight angle but should be OK..Might want to check w/ CHP..They are there to help folks understand the VC... chances are you won't get stopped for a while, but eventually you will.. take care.

Totally illegal by basic understanding of the VC you just read. Deliberately installing your plate like that is potentially going to cost you much more than a missing plate first offense fix it ticket depending on officer's digression.
Good luck with that one.

In my humble opinion that front plate is not legal. It's not at an angle that can be read by an officer. If you have it on you might as well have it on the way you and other people can read. If the car in front of you can't read or see your license plate the your taking chances of getting a ticket. When i was a kid i remember my dad mentioning he had gotten a fixing ticket for a dirty license back plate bc the rear light plate was dim and the officer could not read the plate. So, all in all no it isn't legal. I hate that law bc i sometimes don't like how the license plate is at on my tacoma

It can’t be seen, you’ll get pulled over one day with a fix it ticket. Until then, just leave.
