There's a very long and unfortunate history of Native Americans doing everything right and playing by the rules to ask for what they want only for the government to be like "Well they're really more like guidelines..."

The Cherokee in Georgia actually did have their own Country. The U.S. gave them N. GA, and parts of NC, TN. However when they discovered gold in N. GA sparking the U.S.'s first gold rush Georgia siezed all the land, and the U.S. Gov. said "Hey, you can't take the Cherokee Nation and just say it's yours. Georgia pretty much said "yeah, that's exactly what we're doing" and the U.S. Gov. really didn't have the muscle to enforce it. Thats one of the main causes of the Trail of Tears.

Thomas Jefferson also entertained the idea of freeing the slaves and sending them to Louisiana so they'd have their own state, territory or colony. And Liberia in Africa was also created by a private company to send freed slaves. That's why Liberia's flag is the same as the US but with 1 star. They sent 13000 former slaves to Liberia and they kept American traditions and identified as "Americo-Liberian"
