Sony ECM G1 (3 month review) vs Rode VideoMicro

This is a 3 month review for the Sony ECM-G1 wireless microphone. During this review I put the ECM-G1 vs Rode VideoMicro to a test, to see which one has the better audio quality. I also compared the cost of these two microphones since they're at different price points, and the overall user experience.

Both microphones have it's pros and cons which in the end comes down to the buyers intended use.

Absolutely THE review on these two mics I was looking for. Well presented. All the key points. Helped me make my decision on purchasing the ECM-G1. Now that's worthy of a sub! Cheers.

Great test of the ECM-G1! My use case is what you tested @ 7:00 with you talking behind the camera and the waterfall in front. The ECM-G1did better than I thought and had a nice, natural balance between the waterfall sound in front and your voice in the background.

The Sony Mike kills the Rode Video Micro IMO, sold my Rode after buying the Sony one.

Your comment about super-cardioid vs cardioid is super important! Thank you for showing this. I vlog the exact same way as you so this is very helpful.

Nice test, thanks for doing the behind the camera comparison. I use the Deity D3 duo for that reason but it's even bulkier than the videomicro. I have now moved to a Sony a6700 and after this I am probably going to get the ECM-G1 for the size, cable free hassle free use. Thanks again for the review.

Super helpful test. I have a Sony ZV-1 and a Rode VideoMicro. I have found that the VideoMicro with a dead cat on it sometimes shows up in my shot when it bobbles around. The ECM-G1 sounds great. I’m definitely adding it to my wishlist.

Quick update. Been on a couple of road trips with the g1. That super Cardio polar pattern is sweet ! Put a small rubber band in the shock mount ... ta-da ! problem solved. This mic isn't for professionals, but it's fantastic for us home video guys. And you my friend, have a new subscriber!

Both mics are great but for different scenarios. Rode is for the vlogger who has his face in the video all the time or for just talking in studio. If youre a landscape vlogger where you talk behind the camera then the G1 is better. The sony ZV-1 built-in microphone is better than the rode for landscape vlogging as noticed in the water fall scene. Great video thanks for sharing.

Thanks for providing the information in this video. Much appreciated. I just purchased ZV-1M2, and the onboard mic isn't the best sound quality. I was looking for a video that gives the sound when working behind the camera for the ECM-G1. Your video video provided a good example with the waterfall and voice. I have had the same experience with a similar mic as the Rode mic where the shock mount vibration is picked up, It is very frustrating to hear the tap tap tap sound from the mic mount in post-production.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It was most helpful. Are you still using the ECM-G1 now?

I had a similar problem with the shock mount making noise on the VideoMicro. I found out the notches on the tightening ring are meant to hold the cord. By adding tension to the shock mount, there is no knocking sound. I can’t really tell how you have it set up because you are obviously using it while recording, but that might help someone else in the future.
