In east-german schools music lessons contained a lot of actual singing: 
50% folk songs and 50% marching and party songs of the working class (Kampf- und Parteilieder der Arbeiterklasse).

We actually hated these, but until today I still know all the lyrics.

This "Ami, Go Home!" was unfortunately not part of our curriculum, because of its references to a unified Germany (father Rhine & Loreley) - but it is i.m.o. the most striking of its kind.

I've learned a fair bit of German just listening to songs from all kinds of ideologies and genres, be it WWII era, Cold War or Wagner. German music is such a polychromatic thing. Lovin' it!
