Its because the fuselage is a lifting body. Its shaped like the cross section of the wing, and so the fuselage generates 40% of the lift. That's why the MiG-29 is so incredibly maneuverable at low speed, its almost impossible to stall.

In my opinion, one of the best-looking jet fighters, along with the Super Hornet. I really like how the normal engine intakes stay closed during taxiing and takeoff - special intakes on top open up so stuff doesn't get sucked into the engines.

Original MiG-29 was built as a fighter to be based not far from Line of Contact to provide QRF, fight directly over the front line. So at the time of inception the range was "good enough". Of course as time went on, it all changed and so did the requirements.

First time I saw one was when I was stationed in Germany in the 90’s after the wall came down while going through a NATO TACEVAL. Being a Cold War soldier, it made the hair on my neck stand up when it flew over our Patriot site. The German Luftwaffe got a few of them from East Germany after the wall came down and it added some serious realism to the exercise along with the Hind D’s.
