With concealment common and women expected not even to show knowledge of the disease, infection of families by men was widespread across all classes

Syphilis was the first disease that was found after the invention of printing.
It didn’t take long for the newspapers to roll out various scaremongering papers, the news of this new disease spread quickly and caused panic among the public.

Syphilis was often front page news and those that could read were well aware of the dangers of the disease. It was the first disease to be known as a sexually transmitted disease, which lead to a huge amount of taboo as it was often linked to a persons moral sexual state.

The major problem was the knowledge that the infection could ony be transmitted through intercourse. Very publicly embarrasing.
