I remember watching this for the first time when this aired. Absolutely blew my mind, wondering what the hell was so badass to take down the Borg like chumps.

I have to admit, this teaser scared the shit out of me when I first saw it. Two Borg cubes moving towards the foreground about assimilate, only to suddenly be blasted to pieces by an unknown force (which obviously we later discover to be Species 8472). I actually don't know which is scarier, the Borg cubes moving towards the foreground threatening to assimilate or the cubes being blown to pieces by an alien force that seems to be more powerful than the Borg.

This is a perfect illustration of the trope known, ironically enough, as "The Worf Effect"- impressing you with the power of a new faction in a show by showing them easily dominating an previously-established powerhouse.

Named after the way that a new alien's power would be established in TNG by having Worf hurl himself recklessly at it only to be smacked aside with ease.

There was something extremely satisfying, and unsettling, about watching this cold alien race get rip to shreds with so little effort.

Species 8472 was certainly the most bizarre aliens in Trek.
And that's saying a lot.

now that's how u do a cold open..ain't one trek fan that would've changed the channel after seeing that.. still gives me chills... Voyager may not be my favorite Trek series overall but it has some of my all time favorite episodes like this one and maybe my all time favorite Trek episode Year of Hell so while i understand some of Robert Beltrans criticisms, especially with Endgame which overall is an amazing 2 episodes but never seeing the crew we know officially touch down on Earth is still annoying 23 years later, Voyager overall was and always be one of my all time favorite series and it has so many classic episodes that if they had fixed my main gripe of just how ridiculously easy they seemed to have it for most of the show, if it showed them struggling and conflicted and having to do things they never thought theyd be capable of doing like Ransom and his crew then it just might be my favorite trek series but as we have it id probably put it in 3rd behind TNG & DS9

Worth remembering that up to this point, even a single Borg cube had been depicted as a civilization-ending threat that could best entire fleets of starships in battle; and we'd only ever seen *one* of them on screen at a time. Cold open is two of them just getting absolutely wrecked within 20 seconds and you know something bad has come to town

I remember watching this when it first premiered, and my reaction was the same as Spider-Man's when Ant-Man became Giant-Man: "What the f---!!!" 'Worf Effect' or not - that's a textbook way of instantly focusing the attention of your audience and ensuring that they NEVER channel-surf for the rest of the hour.

I will never forget seeing this on TV when it aired. My entire family was absolutely floored. I whispered "What...the...fuck" like 5 times under my breath so my mom wouldn't hear. Absolutely blew my mind.
