You got it wrong! The original version is actually the one Brendan chose to sing and was sang by Rosa Eskenazi in early 1920s. "Eimai Prezakias" (translation I'm a Junkie) was the initial song title and is one of the most famous forbidden rembetika due to its explicit lyrics. Following the years, the lyrics were softened to the version that you mention in order to go "mainstream".
