This thing is DOPE for that kind of scratch. It would make a great deck for someone who doesn't need Carplay/AA but wants some easy sound sculpting and clean RCA outs. Well done, Kenwood and HiFi!!

This is what I have in my truck. Awesome deck and complete audio control and Bluetooth calling.

I just bought one, exactly what I was looking for, Thank You. This unit seems to be discontinued, I almost pulled the trigger on the New KDC-x705 but wasn't sure if it was as good. I plan on using the pre-outs and amps for each channel.

The 80prs has .5% distortion at 4.8v on the preout. That's amazing.

I've always used Alpine single DIN head units and they are bulletproof with great build quality. I picked up a nib Kenwood excelon x501 for my nephew that he had never used. Not quite an 80prs but definitely great budget head unit for SQ build or SPL build. I'm getting just over 4 volts pre out before clipping. Also very capable on the processing side of things with lots of features but definitely not Alpine build quality. From the volume knob to the buttons mushy and hard to turn almost crunchy LOL. They definitely could have put a rubber band around the volume knob so you can turn it but nevertheless it's a really good budget head unit. I think you could pick it up for $150 just a guess I forget what it was selling for.
Rob if you have the time I would love to see it tested.

Definitely a quality budget h/u option. Nice review.
I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on a JVC KD-T915BTS. It has most of the same features as the Kenwood tested here but, I believe it's three way crossover network is brand pass capable. The JVC is available from Crutchfield for $129.95.

Love da vid, but a couple of concerns 1) can't disable the internal amp and 2) volume needs to be so high to get 4 volts or more. Overall fantastic vid

Thank you for the review! Just installed mine and it’s night and day compared to my previous head unit.

I love my KDC-X304! It supplies all of my needs for the system in my truck! 💪

I always run a pre-out eq. My hifonics is 9 volts output and I can keep my volume low and sound clean. It's in the tuning.

Isn't one of the main selling points of the 80PRS the audiophile internal components? There's no mention of these components on this unit. Granted it is about 1/6 - 1/8 the price of a second hand 80PRS, it is a bargain and gem as you stated.

Damn, I have the KDC-X303. It's about identical, I think the only difference is the bluetooth chip is different. I must say I absolutely love this thing, had no idea it was an 80 PRS killer though, lol! I'm running NVX component 2 ways in my front doors, coaxial 2 ways in my rear doors, all off a Kicker CXA 300.4. My low end is a Skar SDR-12 D2 getting about 800 watts RMS off a Pioneer GM-D8601, in a Fox Acoustics ported underseat box for my quad cab Dodge truck. Gains set on a scope, verified it does go clean up to 35, though I don't run it that high. Sound quality has been absolutely great, and besides a software issue which was fixed with a quick update when I first got it, it's been rock solid. Assuming the only difference seems to be the bluetooth chip, if you really need to save a buck grab an X303. My buddy has an X302 in his BMW which seemed about identical when I went through the menus on it, not sure what the difference is for the X302. By the way if anyone has any strange settings menu issues with this, in my case I couldn't get into audio control sometimes, just update the firmware. Kenwood has the firmware and all the information on their website, it loads onto a USB flash drive. Great video, happy thanksgiving to everyone celebrating it today!

My jvc kw-r940bts has pretty much the same settings. It’s a double din with a similar layout to your pioneer and was only $99. The stuff like car type and speaker size compensates for deficiencies and seems to work pretty well. If you have a passive front stage changing the tweeter size helps match their output to the mids. Overall I’ve been really impressed

I would be interested to hear the difference between this and the Pioneer. One reason the 80 PRS is so well loved is the actual signal coming out is really nice. Features match between the 2, but what does it sound like? That's an important comparison.

i have the same head unit but in Romania it's called KMM-BT356 and i got it for 100$, same " 3x5v preouts " same interface not a bad reciever thanks for testing it out much love

One DOPE feature this has is the Tweeter crossover. On passive component sets, the head unit will attenuate every frequency above the set point so that your tweeter doesn't get hit with too much power. This is much better than just an EQ because every frequency is affected evenly so dips aren't as prevalent

Been a Kenwood guy, since I had a pull-out version #1990s 😆 Once I tried the Excelon model, it’s the only one I buy now. Thanks for sharing 👌🏾
