India is possibly the one of the biggest names in field hockey and for most of the early to late 1900’s they where the greatest team in the world, but that all changed after their gold medal win at the 1980 Olympics as the team declined over the next three decades, with the team failing to win a medal at the Olympics or World Cup.

In this video I will be taking an in depth look at the rise of the Indian National hockey team, through their thirty year fall and then their great rise in the last couple of years.

I think the switch to Astroturf really affected hockey in the Subcontinent. The poorer countries at that point couldn't really adapt to the speed of the game due to lacking facilities.

The reasons they couldn't compete after 1980 was due to a couple of factors, 1. A lot of the players came from Punjab or Haryana, which during the 1980s went through some turmoil. 2. A lack of funds to build sufficient infrastructure ie Astros at the grass level to develop new talent 3. A lack of funds compared to the western teams 4. The first teams training fell behind the western teams ie sports nutrion, long high altitude training ect

thankful these problems are now behind us so the team should be performing better

During early 70-80s every Indian college used to have hockey as a major game. Our ancestors used to play hockey in their school and college time but after decline of Indian hockey we didn't had much of hockey left either at school or college, cricket saw a rise after 1983 and since then cricket replaced hockey as top game in India but after bronze medal win we hope to see revival of Indian hockey
