Treading water for 2 days. I'm dead after 10 minutes. And then a POW in one of the biggest hell holes of WW2. That was one tough man right there. Thank you for everything.

Good obit on line. He served 20 years in the Navy, retired to Florida and raised his family working as Auto Mechanic. Lived a long and full life.

My father got the purple heart for saving a fellow soldier. He was shot and survived . He was a blue devil in the war . He was in germany etc. He was the best father anyone could have . I miss him so much he died in aug of 99. Im 70 and still miss him and think of him all the time.

He remembered who had taught him a skill he could rely on later.

And he made the effort of going back to his teacher and appreciate what the latter had done for him.

And I guess it was far more than just learning how to swim:

He was taught to leave his comfort zone and to be tough on himself if need be.

And yes, that came in handy when he needed it most !

Handsome kid. The Japanese treated their POW's horrifically. Death marches, torture, starvation among other things. Disgusting. I am glad this young made it home alive. Bless our soldiers.

I'm a veterans from the United States Navy honestly I can't recall whether or not they make sure I could swim though I could like a fish I'm telling you this and the reason is because of the comments below me mentioning that they wouldn't let you into the Navy unless you could swim boot camp had no swimming there was no pool okay and I don't understand how anybody can think that wouldn't let you in if you could swim if you are put in duty in a submarine how is swimming going to help you if your boat sinks

Damn. Another unbelievable war story. It’s wonderful it had a happy ending for this sailor but heartbreaking that so many others didn’t make it.

Where would be without guys like this. Never forget. There are some out here who think serving and being captured by the enemy while serving our country is being a loser. They ask why would anybody do this? Well let me say it again, where would we be without guys like this. Never forget. This whole generation is the reason we are here today. And thank God we still have men and women of newer generations who serve and we will honor them and never forget.
