If anyone wants to know more about the idea of the Boltzmann brain:

The Boltzmann brain is a kind of "paradoxical" conclusion that was described by scientists after they understood thermodynamics (specifically entropy) but before they knew about the big bang.

At the time, many thought that the universe was eternal and unchanging on a macro scale (including Einstein, which is the reason he tried to fiddle with the cosmological constant to make a static universe and missed the opportunity to be the one to discover the changing cosmos).

However, the second law of thermodynamics says that entropy must always increase. This contradicts the idea of an eternal universe because there should be minimum and maximum entropy states. And so the universe should have a point in time with minimum entropy (a beginning) and a point with maximum entropy (heat death of universe).

To resolve this contradiction, it was pointed out that the second law of thermodynamics is fundamentally based on probability. Basically high entropy states are more likely to be observed than low entropy states.

So, if you wait long enough the universe will eventually go to a lower entropy state, just by chance. And that would be what we are observing. By chance our universe became low entropy and it's now naturally unwinding itself back to a high entropy state.

But! It is far more likely for smaller regions of the universe to become low entropy than the whole universe at once. For example, it is more likely that the solar system forms by chance than our whole galaxy. Taking that idea to the extreme, it is more likely that a brain was randomly formed with memories, than the solar system itself. That's the Boltzmann brain.

In modern science, this line is logic is no longer necessary to consider because the universe has a known beginning with minimum entropy, the Big Bang. Though some cosmologists still think about it as a thought experiment.

is this what happened to the astronaut after only his brain is left by the suit?

I wonder if he’s actually the guy in the space suit that kept taking parts of him to keep him alive, and the suit gets to civilization with nothing but the brain left.
