It’s been over 20 years since the assassination of the Democratic Republic of Congo's former president Laurent-Désiré Kabila at the hands of his child soldiers. Kabila was the leader of the rebellion that overthrew President Mobutu of Zaire in 1997 and restored the country's name.

What many don’t know about him is how he spent most of his life in exile, engaged in the illegal gold and diamond trade and wild schemes to overthrow the dictatorship of Joseph-Désiré Mobutu, his immediate predecessor.

Along the way, he briefly recruited Che Guevara in 1965, and the armies of Uganda and Rwanda, which helped bring him to power in 1997.

In this episode of African Biographics we look at the rise and fall of Laurent Desire Kabila of the DRC.

African history like a Hollywood series always leaves you eager for season 2. Fascinating. Now I want to hear how Joseph Kabila is not his bio son and what prompted the Congolese people have a son get the presidency as if its a documentary as usual

Until men of integrity & good character, honest, compassionate, empathetic, resourceful & intelligent men who have the fear of God in them & love for their fellow being come into power, these kind of stories will never end.

Leader, revolution, brothel, smuggling should never be mentioned in the same sentence

As president, he also cancelled all contacts with foreign mining companies from USA, France, Canada. The contracts were by then agreed when he was a rebel. Most of the contracts were signed in Goma, Walikale and Kisangani.

Very informative, as a Congolese I thank you! Mzee Kabila was indeed one of the worst president of the DR Congo. He created conflicts that the population is still undergoing right now in the eastern Congo and this 'cause if those allies who helped him to go to power! Keep it up

Thank you as a person born in Canada I rarely hear about geopolitics of Africa and you do a great job of explaining everything. Weirdly it's always the same 5 country meddling in African affairs. Clearly with your work we can see that foreigner keep trying to corrupt and be the puppet master of Africans country. Hopefully one day all those country will own their lands.

Cry my beloved continent 😭 till when will we be fighting amongst ourselves!?, Till when will we be divided and be reduced to ethnicities. We are the richest continent and God chosen yet we are so poor and so cruel and very gready. Why do we allow colonism to exist yet we claim to be free. Africa wake up this fighting is not good, let's work together towards unity, see a black man as your brother let's accept each other. How I wish we can sing in one tune as Africans
