Sentience vs Sapience

There is a strange and hazy line between the inanimate and things which can feel and sense, and also between more complex animals and humans.

Utterly fascinating. And, I had no idea the bar we set for sentience was so low. Or that so many of us are commonly, mistakenly, referring to, “sapience, ” when we say, “sentience.” It’s an education knowing you.

I've long appreciated the Eldraeverse distinctions for sentience, sapience, and sophonce. Sentience being sensory capacity, applying in various degrees to bacteria, thermostats, plants, animals, with the difference just being bandwidth. Sapience as rational thought and creative problem solving, applying to many animals. Autosentience as self-awareness which many animals but not plants possess to varying degrees. And Sophonce as personhood, requiring things like enough autosentience to meaningfully describe oneself as "I, " sapience, and generally "being a self-aware, self-defining entity capable of independent reason and volition"

I think before uplifting animals, we need to think about uplifting people who experience brain damage or loss pf function on any form first. I feel like we have such a hard time defining sapience because we want a definition which preserves the status quo. A definition which makes humans special and allows us to continue to epxloit other animals as it best suits us.

An abused animal will lash out and a well treated animal wont so they must be thinking about memories, even if in a limited capacity.

Sapience is concious self awarness of the universe. We, each of us, is the universe's thinking capacity. The human force is the fifth and most powerful force in the universe, but it waxes and wains simultaneously. The fermi paradox is to follow us through all time unless there is a single government under rule of law.

iirc there was this old sci-fi that has a sapient yet not sentient being, they are a bunch of uplifted robots basically, that have capacity to do wisdom, yet, can't feel any sensation or awareness of their surrounding

Speaking of consciousness, what would be the feasibility of splitting your consciousness into several different pieces or copies for example, if faster than like travel, never becomes available, but you are able to use some form of fast data communication, sending a a copy of your consciousness to the system light-years away within a short period of time and implanting it into an artificial body? Would it then be possible to refuse your consciousness into a new whole or would they drift too far from the base personality

There's a good argument to be made that it's only warm-blooded animals, with more sentience coming about with more social behavior (where you're figuring out what others are doing). It's unlikely beetles would be sentient.
