If you're able to cast Lemmon and Matthau in your movie, it will do very well!

Vastly underrated movie. It's not quite as good as my favorite Billy Wilder film, The Apartment. However, I do think it serves as a great companion piece to that film. As they're both essentially about hope existing in a cynical world.

FOOTBALL ANYBODY? - If you haven't seen this movie and want to laugh and enjoy the early comedy dynamics of Jack Lemon and Walter Mathew's "professional football insurance" scamming techniques they get away with, you're missing a doozy of a motion picture. JB

Now in 2020 for the first time having seen this & being a great fan of Wilder’s other work, I cannot view this among of his best efforts. It has its moments, especially with Matthau in great form but the whole enterprise, to me, seems generally labored & uninspired. I wonder what Wilder thought of it even with the Matthau & Lemmon together but I do not see the magic that supposedly made them a great screen team (at least here) for their 12 other movies together. . Also the 2 Hour running time belabored the bittersweet comedy which in 90 minutes would have been sufficient. The character of Lemmon‘s sneaky ex wife was either not interestingly enough developed or else Judi West was just not up to the part. Besides which bittersweet comedy is not, in my opinion, one of Wilder‘s strong suits & the cynicism here is unconvincing. Even THE APARTMENT blended the comedy/cynicism more convincingly. When Wilder decided not to mix these two disparate elements together he came up with, I feel his most satisfying purely romantic film AVANT! AVANTI! I guess he had mellowed with age although I still prefer much of his earlier work where his heart was usually not to be on display, at least overtly.

Late 50s into the 60s we’re such a bad time for movies. I can’t even watch cornball junk like this.
