How to edit RAW files with GIMP... and darktable

Is it possible to edit RAW files with GIMP? Or do you need another application, like darktable, to work in conjunction with GIMP?

"How to edit RAW files with GIMP... and darktable" except it do not show how to use gimp together with darktable... Slightly "confused, " well at least it taught me that I can customize the tools panel. Currently a heavy user of just using the search function for selecting tools.

I have gimp and now that I've figured out how to used it for doing my milky way images including finally working out how to copy 1 layer mask to the next below so I'm not needing to physically rub out stars on each foreground layer image, i can now try darktable for editing of the sky and foreground images instead of my current editing program of the last 4 years which is Canon DPP4. Then stack the sky like I normally do in sequator, before sending it and any foreground images to gimp to finish off. Next video i will watch is how to edit with darktable, which is in the queue

Lightroom is for sure an alternative to Darkroom. Just my experience here, but all the pros I know (i know 7 of them) in the St. Louis area use Darktable.

I have a question about this. I shoot a lot of photos with my smartphone and edit them on my computer. They are not raw, so would Darktable still be a better editor than Gimp, or would they do the same thing?
