The South Korean military has sternly warned North Korea to stop sending balloons filled with waste after hundreds reportedly carrying animal feces, organic rubbish and batteries, floated across the border on Wednesday. Residents north of Seoul were told to stay indoors.

South Korea has been flying balloons to North Korea for decades, and South Korea's position is that it cannot stop this because it is freedom of expression. In response to this, North Korea also released balloons, and North Korea countered South Korea's warning that this too was freedom of expression.
