You’ve all seen the posts on social media about the times that a barista at Starbucks spelled someone’s name hilariously wrong, and you may have even had it happen to you, but why does it seem to be such a common occurrence? Has social media blown it out of proportion, or are there other factors at play here? Of course, it can get pretty loud in a Starbucks, so it’s not exactly easy to hear everything. From the celebrities who got cups with misspelled names to the multiple spellings of one name, let’s take a look at why Starbucks always spells names wrong.

What's the craziest way Starbucks baristas have misspelled your name?

I think the real reason is most people take photos of their drink when they see that their name was misspelled so they can put it on social media and that's just free advertisement for Starbucks

Going to Starbucks as a Lauren is always entertaining because I’ll become Laura 50% of the time. They seem to spell it Lorin an awful lot, but I’ve never seen anyone in the public eye spell it that way. My spelling is pretty standard, I think.

My name is Alex and one time I told a barista exactly how to spell it and she still wrote "AELX". But I work at Starbucks and lots of people mumble or whisper when they say or spell their name. Also there are different spellings and we don't have time to ask everyone how to spell their name. Also Starbucks is a very loud environment behind the counter so even if someone speaks up, we mishear things sometimes.

Fair enough. All the points mentioned were logical BUT what is annoying as hell is that as SHOWN, even common names that everyone should know such as Georg get misspelled. Apparently, people are not drilled or checked beforehand as to how to spell most common names. Very indicative of a decadent school system.

Alright, this is just a story, no hate! My dad is British and he has a very heavy accent. He pronounces his name, Mark, but his accent has made many baristas spell it very different ways. He doesn’t mind if someone spells his name Marc but he was called Moss. He doesn’t mind it, yet again, but he just thinks it’s funny.
Another story, my dad took me to Starbucks just for me to get a drink. He ordered normally, and then the barista asked for the name, I wanted him to say my name, Bella, so he did. The barista calls out the name “Darrell” and we don’t move, thinking it’s not our drink. A few more people go up to grab their drinks and then we start to wonder why mine has not been called. My dad goes up to the counter and looks through the drinks, he sees my Frappachino and nobody else had asked for one of those by the looks of it. He looks at the name, “Darell” and then chuckles. He brings the drink to me. I am assuming the barista thought my dad was ordering in his name and thought that Bella was not a boys name, therefore, he put down a boys name. It was just a great laugh, yet again, no hate! I love Starbucks and will never stop going there, no matter the circumstances! ❤️💕

I don’t really care if my name isn’t on there or if it gets misspelled, I just care about having my Frappuccino or hot chocolate

My name is Lily

I've gotten Lilly, Lillie, Lili, Lilli, Lillie, Lyly, Lylly, Lylli, Lyli, Lyllie, Lylie, and then I've gotten Lucy, Lillian, Lilith, Luna, and, best of all,
Lil' E.

Can't speak for Starbucks since I'm not big on coffee. But when I was working for a fast casual restaurant in college that also called out orders by name, I'd give the total to the customer, THEN ask for the name. Probably 80% of the time if they had an unusual name, I was already holding their credit card and surprisingly could figure out how to spell it.

they are encouraged to misspell a name anytime it isn't specifically spelled out for them because it's free advertising.

at Macdonalds, you are given a number after ordering. and in some Chinese coffee shops you will have to order and pay by smart phone. no mistakes will be made.
