Legendary reggae, rocksteady & ska artiste, JIMMY CLIFF performs "THE NEWS" off his "Follow My Mind" album. The album was released after his groundbreaking and successful tour of Nigeria in the early '70s.

I was in Primary 6 in 1974, and I knew about his arrest on the radio. I was deeply saddened. He remains one of my favourite reggae musicians.

What a voice! Music was conveying message in that era . I can't hold tears from running down my face when I here a sorrow in the song. Thanks Jimmy for lifting up people's spirit during the difficult times this planet has experienced. memorable music, he was in nigeria for a concert and he arrived 2 days later than agreed and nigeria had a military leader then in person of general yakubu gowon. as soon as jimmy arrived the airport in lagos, he was arrested and detained at the police station. my father was among the police officers that escorted him to detention upon his arrest. his offense was that he signed a concert deal to play in nigeria and he went to u.k to play on the appointed date instead and then nigeria had a no nonsense govt. my dad told me the full story and my dad said he told jimmy not to worry that he was a big fan... but jimmy looked at him with a scorn that my dad never forgot in a hurry, i laughed at the story though. he was later freed and he played and toured nigeria as agreed. lol!!

In those days my uncle Mike,  brought Jimmy to Nigeria for what was a nice tour untill a rival business man filled a breach of contract suit against Jimmy for defaulting on an ealier contract signed in london to perform in Nigeria, Jimmy split town soon as he made bail, causing my uncle lose lots of money. Nigerians adore Jimmy all the same.
