I am so glad someone else has finally noticed how amazing this is! If you cool it in liquid nitrogen before hitting it with the laser the glow intensity and duration is absolutely insane, you can almost read by the light of the glow alone if you use a good 365nm UV LED. It's actually not being caused by fluorescent brightener additives like coumarin in printer paper, but is caused directly by the cellulose and lignin of the wood pulp itself. The large biopolymer molecules have large numbers of pi bonds and the excited electrons are getting stuck in a triplet state. An interesting recent paper on a related cellulose derivative from China is "Ultralong phosphorescence cellulose with excellent anti-bacterial, water-resistant and ease-to-process performance".
