In this video Heimler walks you through Unit 5 Topic 3 (5.3) of the AP government curriculum which is all about political parties.

Political parties are a kind of linkage institution which connects average people to the political process. They does this by educating and mobilizing voters, writing platforms, and putting forward candidates for elections.

Political parties do a lot more (and arguably a lot more important) things than put candidates up for elections. One of my sayings is, "Politics is a team sport." What that means is that in order to actually do anything such as pass laws or budgets, party members have to work together. We see this happening in Washington D.C. today, as the Democratic party is having difficulty keeping all its members of congress working and voting together to implement their election promises.

This is even more important in a parliamentary democracy, where the government must command the confidence of a majority of the members of parliament or else the government will be dismissed by the Sovereign. And new elections called unless some alternative government can command the confidence of MPs. Politicians tend to hate early elections, because they just might lose.
