Onset: 28 weeks gestation
Disappears between 5-6 months
Testing: Supine, support head and shoulders. Allow the neck to drop back providing a stretch to the anterior neck muscles
Response: Shoulder abduction, elbows and wrists extend, followed by shoulder adduction, elbows and fingers flex.
If it does not disappear, the reflex interferes with balance reactions in sitting, hand-eye coordination, and visual tracking. Asymmetry may indicate a brain lesion, injury, or peripheral nerve involvement of the upper extremity.
