At Concord Consortium we are developing the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP) as a learning environment for students and teachers in grades 6 through 14 to work with data, and for curriculum developers to use as a data analysis and visualization tool in their online curricula. CODAP is a work in progress. In what ways is it already an environment for learning and doing data science in the classroom? Where is it lacking and how might it be made better?

In this participatory webinar we’ll take a look at CODAP’s strengths and weaknesses with respect to data science education. This will involve us in thinking about how we want students to engage with data science. We’ll think together about Tim Erickson’s “data moves,” the extent to which CODAP can support them, and what is their importance for students’ learning experiences. We’ll discuss some guidelines for designing data science education software that I put together recently and use them to come up with ideas about how to move CODAP further toward supporting learning and doing data science.
