Disappearing Smoke - Science Trick

You should show the one where you light a candle on a plate, place it on the floor, hold a clear (but heat resistant) pipe over it, and drop some powdered coffee creamer through it. I think there is only a certain kind of creamer that will allow this experiment to work, but the flame should travel all the way up the pipe and shoot out a little by following the powder up. Google should have more info on this. It's really cool to see!

They first replace most of the oxygen in the jug with the smoke, and then fill the jug with vaporized ethanol. The ethanol is what is burning - but in order for that to occur, the reaction requires oxygen. The only way to get oxygen is through the top of the jug, so the reaction effectively pulls oxygen into the jug, replacing the smoke very quickly as the ethanol burns from top to bottom.

Or at least, that's what I think happens.

The alcohol mixed with the smoke and so it was flammable. Awesome!

It's easy: The alcohol is flammable. It mixes with the smoke and when it burns, either propels the smoke out of the bottle, or neutralizes it.

You can also get some nice whistling (higher pitched) sounds if you use smaller bottles.

We had SO much fun with alcohol and big bottles when I was young. Sometimes the burn was really slow, and sometimes the bottle would SCREAM! Those big glass jugs are getting hard to find these days tho, everything is in plastic.
