"Two-Color Counters are simple counters that kids can manipulate.
You can think of subtraction as subtracting one amount from another. Place 5 counters, then take away 3 of them to equal 5 - 3. There are still 2 counters, therefore 5 - 3 = 2. Place 5 yellow counters, flip 3 of them to red, and then count how many yellow counters are left to represent the subtraction of 5 and 3. Subtraction models can be created using part-part-whole structures. Finding a missing component where the entire is 5 and the other component is 3 is analogous to subtracting 5 from 3.
