Massive props to this wonderful woman for going so far to save Spongey and give him the best life she could in the time they had. A lot of other people, even if they wanted to help him, would've just let him be euthanized because of how expensive taking care of him would've been while he was recovering. Awww! I have a special needs (Russian) tortie. Due to improper care and feeding before she came to me, I have to hand feed her and tube feed her water daily. The first month of having her cost me almost $1500 to save her life. However, with care, she has gained over 150 g, and is now strong as can be! (Going on 5.5 yrs of having her now.)

She cuddles, loves her baby blankets more than her normal dirt enclosure, and falls asleep in my arms or lays on my chest just staring up at me, arms all splayed relaxing. She absolutely LOVES to have her scute behind her head rubbed and will nestle down and sleep if given the opportunity.

She definitely knows her people, and she won't cuddle with people she doesn't know (she won't lay down and will continue to keep walking till she's put down). She knows my voice and gives "nose kisses" when held up (and she feels like it!).

Awe. It’s a lifetime commitment to care for a tortoise let alone a sick one. Much respect to you for your commitment. We had a Texas Tortoise come in our garage 8 years ago. And we’re in Las Vegas. He was apparently imported from South Texas. We ended up discovering he was our neighbors. But we ended up keeping him. He’s supposedly about 33-35 yrs old. But the Vet also thought that he was a Desert Tortoise. Yup. He is our lifelong buddy. I’m very good with that. Thanks again for the commitment.

Your story has me feeling so many things. First of all I’m so sorry that you lost your soulmate. I admire you for the care you gave to this fascinating creature. My cat lived until he was 19 years old, but he was on three medications in the last three years. He completely got me through the Covid days and years because I was alone since my husband worked all day. The relationship we had was something that my friends who did not have pets could not comprehend, but I miss him so much, as I’m sure you miss your baby ❤

Spongee is beautiful, a work of art. I'm sorry he became unwell but he had care and love and a wonderful mom. I guess tortoises don't live as long as turtles do. Life is not a gift, it's a loan, sooner or later we all go home. It's not so much about how long we are here, but the joy we share during that time.
