I think your fabric was too thin so it was catching on the bit underneath the needle causing it to snag. It’s happened to me a couple of times, I’d recommend first using a scrap piece of fabric because actually sewing onto your garment. That was you can see whether it is your fabric that’s the issue. If it is then you can use something under the fabric to stop it catching
