I use waterless hand cleaner on shellac finishes. It cleans superbly well. It also removes stains on electric guitars that nothing else will. An old master long case clock maker showed me that trick. We were buying wood from the estate auction of a deceased luthier. I bought some clamps, cauls, and a few other tools.

Daniel, was it tooth paste? It makes perfect sense because it has aluminium oxide which is slightly abrasive giving polishing properties.
