This painting was an immediate reaction to the nazi's devastating casual bombing practice on Basque town of Guernica during Spanish civil war. It is a reminder of the tragedies of war and an anti war symbol and also an embodiment of peace.
Pablo Picasso exposed the horror of the bombing in his famous anti-war painting called Guernica.

History of this Painting :
Guernica, official name Gernika, is a town in the province of Biscay, in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, Spain.

During the Spanish Civil War,(between democratic Republican Government and fascist forces led by general francisco franco) it was regarded as the northern bastion of the Republican resistance movement and the epicenter of Basque culture, of the German Condor Legion, commanded by Colonel Wolfram von Richthofen, bombed Guernica for about two hours. Germany, at this time led by Hitler, had lent material support to the Nationalists and were using the war as an opportunity to test out new weapons and tactics.

Analysis of the painting :

It is an oil painting on canvas, most touching and anti-war painting in history.

It is a reminder of tragedies of war and an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace.
Ø Painted in monochromatic scheme using grey, black and white.
Ø Overall theme is suffering.
Ø It portrays six humans(four women, one man, one child), a horse and a bull.
Ø These nightmarish figure and dismembered bodies in the painting can be seen as influenced by the movement called Surrealism.
Ø Left of the painting, we can find a woman, who held her head back, screaming in pain and grief. She holds the lifeless body of her dead child. This is the most devastating and unforgettable images in the painting.
Ø To her right is head and partial body of a large white bull, Which is perhaps is the only unharmed and calm figure amidst the chaos represented in the painting.
Ø Bull could be a representation of bull fighting(Spanish tradition).
Ø There is a dove behind the bull, as its image is almost erased out of the painting.
Ø It is symbolic of peace, that is disappeared in Guernica during the war.
Ø Beneath these figures, a dead or wounded man is seen with severed arm and mutilated hand clutches a broken sword. Only his head and arms is seen. Rest of his body is covered by scattered parts of other figures of the painting.
Ø A ghostly flower seen as it grows by the fighter’s hand, which signifies hope, despite the bloodshed that happened.
Ø Centre of the painting stands a terrified horse, with mouth open and seems to be screaming in pain, probably as its side pierced by spear.
Ø The man with a severed arm must be the fallen rider.
Ø Fighting might Picasso’s way of depicting bombing.
Ø Bomb is not used directly. Instead a light bulb with several glow spikes is referred to as the meaning or idea of bombing.
Ø This depicts the flames of bomb.
Ø The bulb is in eye-shaped. It is also said that god overlooks the madness and destruction created due to war.
In the right side of the painting there are three more women is seen. Among them :
 The first woman is depicted as she rushes in looking up at stark light bulb.
 The second woman is depicted as a ghostly figure, leans out of the window of a burning house. Her long extended arm, holding a gas light.
 The third women appears as trapped in burning building, screaming in fear and horror.
All their faces are distorted in agony.
Their eyes are dislocated.
Their mouths are open.
And their desperation is conveyed through this abstract representation.
This painting is considered as the marker of humanity, a timeless piece, whose frightening message is still understood by the people all over the world regardless of national, geographical or religious factors.
