This is what my parents tried and failed to do on my grandfather's property when I was a kid. They built a little house, had gardens etc, but it just never worked out. We had no electricity, and collected water from the main house in 40 litre containers (which did come from rainwater). Eventually, I'd like to continue it, and reclaim the house to finish what was started. It's a nice little house. 2 small bedrooms, a bathroom, and a combined kitchen and lounge. It's now used to store things people don't want, but don't want to throw away. My childhood bedroom is still there, though.

Living off the land is INCREDIBLY difficult for maintaining a GOOD and regular Caloric intake. Most people that try it just FAIL, all of them lose massive amounts of weight and their health becomes worse AFTER they reach a Caloric semi-deficit for an extended period of time, 90 days. Then you can level out a bit, but a person becomes much thinner, by default because the level of physical activity a person must do to survive, more than TRIPLES most people's CURRENT daily routines not living off of the land. You can only hunt and fish so much before it is depleted, you will be competing with predators and other Humans that won't hesitate to kill you & family for just their boots. Then you have to worry about growing crops and the harvest supplementing your diet enough, animals eating the harvest and ways to keep the harvest from rotting and being able to use it later in the Winter (preservation of food). Then there is staying warm, you'll have to burn wood and have enough SEASONED wood to last ALL WINTER LONG for heat and cooking.. It takes TWO SUMMERS to season wood completely and it takes 6 rows/stacks of HARDWOOD/OAK, 40 foot long, 14 inches wide and 4 foot tall to burn ALL WINTER LONG and get you into late April, that's a generous estimate. Do you have ANY idea how many cords of wood that is..??

FYI, I burn wood ALL WINTER and that's what it takes.. SO at least 2 years PREP work to survive ONE WINTER.

Good Luck, you'll need it.. Most people today would die their first Winter or starve before it even hits.

You forgot a few very important things for living truly self-sufficient like this:

1. Land to do this at
2. A weapon (or weapons) to defend your property and yourself with, or to just hunt with
3. Plans to deal with emergencies (deadly storms, wild animals, thieves, food shortage, etc)
4. Entertainment. It's very understandable in today's world that people tend to not realize just how available and oversaturated entertainment is to us in cities and towns, especially with the internet. Without a sense of purpose or even a distraction from boredom, you'll not want to do this.
