White Pass and Yukon Railroad Diesel Locomotives

The White Pass and Yukon is the busiest tourist railroad in North America. Over 600,000 passengers a year board the train in Skagway, Alaska for the scenic journey over the Coastal Mountains and into Canada. While steam locomotives once ruled the rails on this picturesque narrow gauge railway, diesel-electric units are now the main form of motive power for the White Pass and Yukon. In this video, we will take a look at the three different types of diesel locomotives used on the railroad and then we will go trackside for a look at several of them in action in September of 2024.

For anyone wondering what the "other" railroad Whitepass' locomotives went to was, they ended up with US Gypsum, in Plaster City, Imperial County, CA. They still work to this day, on the last industrial narrow gauge route in the US. They still have their snowplows, despite working in the Borrego desert.

Fantastic video about the White Pass and Yukon narrow gauge railroad. Interesting is the change of diesel locomotives and the sale of diesel locomotives to the Durango & Silverton narrow gauge railroad. Very nice shots of the trains, especially the Mikado steam locomotive #73. Thanks for showing and best wishes from Germany.

The 90 class units were rebuilt by CEECO in Tacoma in the 2010's actually and re-engined with Cummins prime movers, along with entirely new electrical equipment, dynamic brakes, radiators and ditch lights. Great to see a well produced video on this railway!

I remember watching an episode of Mighty Trains on this narrow gauge railroad. It was quite cool. Being a massive train and transit nerd. I watched all of the episodes of Mighty Trains on The Discovery Channel. Good to see this railroad is still going strong after all these years

Still can’t get enough of those DL535 units! I would love to learn more about WP&Y from your videos, since you do an amazing job of explaining the history.

My wife and I rode the White Pass and Yukon this past May. We loved it! The Canadian Border was still under several feet of snow. The views were still spectacular! We rode behind one of the new diesels, but we did see the Steam Locomotive number 73 on a test run on the mountain.

I have went to the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad once, back in the summer of 2017. But I would like to come back, even to see their beautiful steam locomotive, White Pass & Yukon 73. Good video of these White Pass & Yukon Diesels.

One of the steam engines that used to run on the White Pass Railroad is No.190 nicknamed "Yukon Queen". She now runs at Tweetsie Railroad. You should go there!
