MORE ABOUT US
-----------------------------------------------------
MAKRIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA made its first concert in Belgrade, Serbia, on January 31, 2015. The orchestra operates under the auspices of the Makris Music Society and the Makris Foundation, and bears the name of the American-Greek composer Andreas Makris (1930-2005).

With the aim to preserve, promote and protect the music and legacy of Andreas Makris, as well as support the development of young musical talents, Makris Music Society has, through its foundation, helped many young artists with scholarships that enabled them to attend masterclasses and workshops in Belgrade, Russia, Germany, Great Britain, USA and Austria. The foundation also helped purchase of musical instruments which are being used by the orchestra as well as other organizations with which the orchestra collaborates.

MSO pays special attention to stylistic interpretation and depending on the repertoire the musicians play on modern or period instruments, or they use certain elements that are appropriate for the appropriate interpretation (e.g. classical or baroque bows). The orchestra gathers some of the most talented musicians in the region, and received the "Orchestra of the Year" Award in 2016 from the Belgrade-based music magazine "Muzika Klasika". In the past several years it has been presenting concerts and operas in Belgrade, Novi Sad and other cities, and has collaborated with soloists such as Evelyn Berezovsky, Natasa Veljkovic, Srdjan Vukasinovic, Urmin Majstorovic, and others. MSO is also the official "orchestra in residence" of the award-winning New Belgrade Opera.

This is different from a typical performance of Cantata 140... and quite beautiful. I hear things that I've never heard before. Thank you!

I come back to this performance again and again - the opening Fantasie is breathtaking. It is so very much alive. I think the Altos in this choir give the most beautiful version of this that I have ever heard. Their sound is fantastic! Colourful yet controlled, and very well prepared. And their vocal instrument is mind-blowing. Divine Beauty. Their voices is so concise, clear and colourful. From 4:20 an onwards - it is the best Alto-journey ever. Divine beauty! I have been listening this recording now over 30 times now - what beautiful voices! Other singers are also doing a very good job, and the orchestra is fresh and lively in their interpretation.

This cantata is such a pure joy to sing. Like, every single voice.

This cantata has often been too rushed in recent decades and crucial sonorities among lower woodwind are lost but here there is the ideal mix of space and discipline even though the soprano is nervous at first.
The words of the cantata carry their own drama and this is beautifully presented without sounding too refined -- maybe as Bach would have performed it in a cold church. Emotion brings warmth.
Bach had boy singers for high parts and the soprano soloist has a boy-like tone.
Thank you for this very special performance.

The Altos in the opening is absolutely fantastic! the most beautiful introduction of Alleluja in the opening chorale, that I have heard on this piece. Good work all of you! This sounds very fresh

Orchestral than most "Big name" baroque orchestras; crisp, clear, vigorous, heartfelt. Dancing with God.

I thought I would be irked by the lack of oboe da caccia/at least English horn, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked with bassoon. Great performance

Algunos solistas son mejorables, pero el coro y la orquesta están muy bien llevados y su dicción es muy clara.
