Guineafowl launchpad

Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida meleagris) using the road as a launchpad to take off in a strictly coordinated fashion! The video was shot at dusk and the birds were taking off and landing in a nearby roost for the evening.

A few interesting facts about Helmeted Guineafowl:

1. There are a total on nine Helmeted Guineafowl subspecies in Africa. They range from the the Natal helmeted guineafowl in Eastern South Africa to the Saby's helmeted guineafowl in Morocco.

2. Helmeted guineafowl are terrestrial birds and prone to run rather than fly when alarmed.

3. If you are someone that doesn't like ticks then Guineafowl are your allies! They are particularly well-suited to consuming massive quantities of ticks, many of which spread tick bite fever (aka lyme disease).

I like how they don't all fly off together. They are independent. They think for themselves.

I actually didn't know that they could fly that well! I thought they were like turkeys or chickins!

I am going to bait them with maize/corn on our farm in Zimbabwe and lie in wait with a shotgun. I have researched the recipes already
