He defended his friend Van Gogh. In a large Jan 1890 art exhibition, another artist was ridiculing Van Gogh's work which his art dealer brother, Theo, had presented at the exhibition. Van gogh was not at the e hibition. When hearing this disdain, Lautrec challenged the artist to a duel frontispiece friends honor. And another friend of Van Gogh's, also exhibiting at the exhibit, told the artist that if Lautrecndied in the duel, he, this other friend of Vincent's, would challenge him anew.

The artist backed down.

Lautrec was a man of honor. And a good and loyal friend.
