It might not be the prettiest car around, but the Kia Picanto in this CarGurus review proves that you really can buy and run a perfectly decent car on a shoestring budget.

Pros
Very cheap to run
Should be reliable
Easy to drive and park

Cons
Lacks the latest tech
Disappointing safety rating
Interior feels cheap

We purchased ours brand new back in 2009. I wanted something cheap with a warranty that would last 2 years and then I'd sell it. Here we are 13 years later and we still have it. It's genuinely never let us down!! It's thoroughly charming in its simplicity, very inexpensive to run and the most reliable vehicle we have ever know. Love it 😁

Seeing how complex, expensive to maintain and over engineered modern cars have become, I definitely can see the value in simple cheap cars like this haha

We have a 17 year old Hyundai and it drives like new. It may be almost worthless but we love it. We also have two Picantos, a 3 year old and a 4 year old both automatics. Utterly reliable.

I got a picanto almost by accident and just so happened to stumble across the most economical first car I could've bought.
I only had one issue with a hole in the exhaust but it did have 98k on the clock and I knew it had an advisory for the last two years about it

It is a minimalist car, the grace is in its simplicity and good design. It is not a car that wants to show anything, just take you everywhere with the minimum expense. I like that about the Kia Picanto.

2:58 - Love it when people say "starts first time" on ads and reviews. As long as they are running even relatively ok, every EFI car since about 1995 starts first time. It's not like there are chokes and carbs and points to require a few attempts. All modern cars start first time! [almost] :o)

It's an LX model, so the engine should be a 1.1 litre. The 1 litre was the gs model. We had a 2004 SE, which we bought in 2008 and did over 80, 000 miles in it over eight years and never let us down. Easy to service and maintain too. We went everywhere in it and motorways are no problem. I would have another, they're great cars.

I have one - 2009 1.1 L, 4 cylinder petrol, 4 speed auto with 200, 000 km. Great reliable car with character. Suspension a bit choppy and fuel consumption so so, but otherwise nice to drive, stable at 130 km/hr and just keeps going. Serviced by specialist every 10, 000 km and using good mineral SAE 20W40 Oil.

I have 3 nice cars which are fast and fun to drive but very expensive on fuel so i bought a 2003 1.0 Yaris at 860KG it is so much fun I just can't stop driving it :D also I went from 4.3 V8 to a 1.0 so fuel lasts for ever :D

Interesting and backs up my own theory about cheap motoring - the trick is to know when to cut your losses, stop spending and scrap/sell it

I need something like this. if it breaks down just leave it on the road.

I bought a 2006 Kia Picanto, not much different from the one you tested, as a throwaway commuter car two years ago.

I'm an old-skool Ford fan, and have had several Fords and new Volkswagen Group cars through my job, and I have to admit I absolutely love my Picanto. So much so that I'm carry out a "rolling restoration" of it. It's a 1.1 Zipp model with a Webasto sunroof.

I paid £799 for it, and I will probably never sell it.

They're a simple, old-skool car that are surprising well put together and generously equipped. They also have bags of character. Well, my mk1 "SA" has.

I really liked this video. Cheers ;)
After Parting with my Porsche 3.2 S Boxster I bought one of these, (a1.1 Glamour) for little money as an in between car to put the shopping in and go around town. I have a 1600cc motorbike for speed. I took it out around some twisty roads and and it was great. As you said steering feedback is excellent and you can chuck into a corner. I didn't experience much body roll but then I am 17st. It also funnily sounds sporty to from the wheel and has fantastically good brakes. Its in good nick and only has 34k on the clock and I think it also looks good in metalic Black. I think I will keep it a bit longer before I go for something like the Mercedes SLK 350 or a modified Mazda Mk2 MX-5. Or something more practical like a Mercedes C Class C350 or the Jaguar XF V6.

I know for sure in those 1.1's you can drag those gears out to rev limit

These are rather good on long drives mixing rural, town and motorway. What you say about the steering is not true. It is positive and quick IF correct tyre pressures are observed.

The same car slightly newer recently paid 1500 for my first car! Curious on your opinion on the clutch in it? My clutch is springy and at the top range of the adjust screw
