The Cancellation of someone is meant to not only humiliate that person but, most importantly, done in hopes of inducing others, through the fear of serious social ostracization, to tow a particular political or societal point of view. It's very easy to see how unfair, cruel, and abusive a practice like this can be turned into. The French Revolution's Reign of Terror was based on thinking like this.
