Note to self: In case of a tornado, don't bother sheltering for protection in a Delta bathtub

I don’t even need a new tub but I couldn’t stop watching. Good stuff.

Delta has the structural integrity of a solo cup

Here’s what I tell my customers; spend the money on items that are not easily replaced.. Tubs are expensive to replace…

I bought a home in 2007, built in 1962 remodeled by prior owner in 2000 and used HD, (receipt was lost in back of kitchen cabinet!) JACUZZI tub surround and it is stellar. Solid, no leaks, fiberglass, solid wall with 3 rounded corners and the fit of the wall to the tub is smart and beautiful, overlaps but you don’t see it and no leaks. Did I say no leaks.! No cracks either and I’ve had 300lb people standing and taking showers. Also HD contractor did a decent job as they did have access under the floor (basement garage) and added some blocking for support. I’d buy another Jacuzzi, but you always go look at it and pay the higher price once for thickness, good solid design.

Both of these construction is why I went with cast iron. Yes, it’s bloody heavy but guaranteed for life.

Delta is a molded plastic tub. Jacuzzi is a fiberglass tub. What a gel coat finish.

Cast iron, can be refinished stands up to all abuses last lifetime if it is properly maintained. I just had my old worn through steel tub replaced with a cast iron. The tub came with a non slip built into the finish and is holding up very well with three grandkids and their toys. Yes it was heavy and I hired a plumber to install. I assisted him and he was very impressed when I rolled it into the rest room on a appliance dolly after uncrating it. Then he and I placed it onto a furniture / piano dolley that I own. Moved into place as the walls and tile were prepared. He marked everything for replumb in the ground. We move tub out he did his thing and I help install the tub into it's final resting place while I own this home.

Interesting comparison. I'll never see Delta in the same way again.

That Kohler tub is made with my father's resin system! It is a fire retardant composition with anhydrous fibers to make the resin stronger with the fiberglass fibers.

when I was having my home built, I had asked for cast Iron over acrilic. the price difference was $250. I never looked back

Bought a cast iron Kohler nearly 40 years ago and it still looks like new. Cost a few bucks more than a steel tub and took 5 guys to get it up the stairs (plus some beer) but was well worth it. I also don't have to worry about punching a hole in the side while kids run a vacuum in the bathroom.

Great information. If I only saw the "good one", I would think that was lower end because of the mishmash of metal, wood, and plastic bottom-to-side bracing.
Nonetheless, many good points to keep in mind.
