Hidden in the woods of Danbury, Connecticut, Hearthstone Castle is steeped in mystery and historical intrigue. Originally known as "Sanford Castle," it was constructed between 1895 and 1899 by architect Ernest G.W. Dietrich for New York photographer Elias Star Sanford and his wife, Emma. Designed as a lavish summer retreat, the castle combines architectural elements from various historical periods with accents of late 19th-century style.

The grand, three-story stone castle boasted 16 rooms, including eight stone fireplaces, turrets, and intricate woodwork imported from Italy. Situated on 18 acres of woodland, only two acres were cleared for the castle, leaving the surrounding land untouched. The stone for the castle was quarried on-site and transported across the property by a specially built railroad. Luxurious wrought iron chandeliers, sconces, and lamps were crafted locally at a Danbury silver-plating factory. Inside, Sanford filled the castle with rare artifacts and elaborate European-inspired decor to showcase wealth and elegance.

After years of neglect, the once-grand estate has been left hidden in the woods to decay. Although the home has been stripped of its imported wood, statues, and chandeliers, the stone walls still stand as a reminder of what once was. Throughout this video, we’ll be going back in time to envision the castle as it once stood.

My late Dad lived on Mountainville when he was a child he used to tell me that him and the children of the castle used to play on the property.

I own the only two remaining chairs from Hearthstone Castle still in Danbury, given to me after years of storage. I reconditioned all the furniture from there to be sold at auction years ago.

Hearthstone castle was a favorite place to go growing up.we used to explore the place in the late 70s and though the 80s... the roof had a bad leak becouse it was flat and not matained well. The roof caved in and it sat there for years with the firsts and second floors that collapsed into the basement.

We all used to sneak into that place before they gutted it. Danbury isn't what it used to be, unfortunately. steep decline over the years.

It’s unfortunate that people see beautiful architecture with such history and they feel the need to spray paint some crap on it.

Sad to see it has become so grim and derelict.
