Pop quiz. Try pronouncing the following. Ready? Go. Elucubrate. Smaragdine. Scherenschnitte. Head scratchers, huh? Not for Jacques Bailly. As the official pronouncer of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, he can tackle any word thrown at him. He started his wordsmith career as the 1980 spelling bee champion. These days, Jacques feels the heat of etymological battle from the other side of the mic.

As a native speaker of the Serbian language, I never think about how words are pronounced because our language is entirely phonetic.

Had Dr. Bailey for Intro to Etymology at UVM. Incredible guy and great professor. One of the best classes I've taken, definitely life-changing

As a Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinalist, I take pride in being able to pronounce nearly every word an unabridged English dictionary if I know its origin. Dr. Bailly is an amazing person, and I'd love to learn from him.

I've been pronuncing GIF the same way he did all my life (as I also do with PNG). I feel so validated now, lol.
