From the creators of the hit sketch comedy show ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN comes SOUL (1968)! Starring Lou Rawls, Nipsey Russell, Redd Foxx, Slappy White, Hines, Hines & Dad, the variety show also featured The Chamber Brothers, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Joe Tex, Leroy Daniels, The Soul Sisters, H.B Barnum and his orchestra, and George Kirby. Additional cast includes, Etta Aarons, Chelsea Brown, Annette Chase, Lili Clark, Byron Gilliam, Judy Pace and more!

The variety show presented an all Black cast of performers in the same style as LAUGH-IN, but highlighting issues on the forefront of Black American's minds at the tumultuous time.

The year 1968 was a an active one in history, from the United States soaring to new heights in space, with the Apollo 8 orbiting the moon, yet down on American soil there were difficult events to contend with in the assassinations of RFK and MLK Jr., rioting, social unrest and the landmark Civil Rights Act.

Wow, I was 12yrs old, we had a black and white tv and it was more than GREAT to see BLACK people in Prime time for an hour. That was more than rare, it was a POSITIVE shot to the SOUL. And we killed it! Integration was changing the landscape across the country and we were feeling that change had finally come. To see an hour of black people on TV was FANTASTICE and SOUL lifting. Especially for the elders, who had endured the most hardship of their life before change came in this way. Yeah, it was a black version of LAUGH-IN, but it had SOUL, from a SOULFUL people. I LOVE BEING BLACK! ✌🏿✌🏿🤎🤎✊🏿✊🏿
