The type of casting choices everyone was looking for in the 80s was Harrison Ford as Batman, Michael J. Fox as Robin, and Raul Julia as Joker.

Because they would be accurate replacements to the original Batman '66 actors.

Nowadays they'll cast anybody for iconic roles, and stars aren't a thing anymore.

I remember that they rushed the first teaser trailer out as soon as they had some good footage of Keaton in the Batsuit to work with (and Nicholson as the Joker).
If you're curious - run a search with "batman 1989 first teaser" and you'll find the right one. It's the one with NO narration and NO Music. EXCEEDINGLY rare for even a teaser trailer to have neither of those things! Shows how much confidence they had in the material they already had shot! And the studio wasn't wrong!
After the fans saw THAT teaser trailer - almost every single one of the doubting fans asking to recast Keaten (and yes - I had my doubts too) SHUT THE HELL UP and we were ALL ON BOARD!!

You sound crazy hell! Micheal Keaton is Batman/Bruce Wayne. But then again Christian Bale played Bruce Wayne amazingly as did Val Kilmer too. He played Batman well too. All three guys nailed the Bruce Wayne character. The only person that didn’t was George Clonney was terrible 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
